Sonic toothbrush: buying guide 2026

What to look at before you buy.

1

Sonic technology and movements per minute

Sonic brushes vibrate the head at very high frequency, typically between 30,000 and 62,000 movements per minute. The side-to-side motion loosens plaque beyond where the bristles physically touch.

Past a certain point, more vibrations add little. Brushing consistently matters more than the spec sheet.

2

Modes and intensity levels

Two or three modes cover most needs: a standard clean, a gentle mode for sensitive gums, and often a whitening mode. Intensity levels are more useful day to day than a long list of modes.

If your gums are sensitive, being able to turn the power down matters more than a high maximum.

3

Battery life

Two weeks between charges is common; better models manage a month or more, and some reach 60 days. It matters most if you travel, because it decides whether the charger comes with you.

Battery life also tends to fall as the device ages, so a longer stated figure gives you more headroom.

4

Pressure sensor and timer

A pressure sensor warns you when you press too hard, which protects the gums and the enamel. A two-minute timer with 30-second intervals helps you cover all four quadrants.

These two features do more for technique than any number of extra modes.

5

The cost of replacement heads

Replacement heads should be changed roughly every three months. Prices vary considerably between brands, and over three years they often exceed the cost of the device itself.

Compare the price per head, not just the price of the brush.

Our tip

Look less at the number of modes and more at the cost of replacement heads — over three years they often exceed the price of the brush itself.
