What to look at before you buy.
A water flosser directs a pulsating jet between the teeth and along the gum line, flushing out debris and disrupting plaque where a brush cannot reach. It is used after brushing, not instead of it.
Studies show it removes plaque effectively and is markedly easier to use than string floss, which is why people actually keep doing it.
A cordless model with a 200 to 300 ml tank gives roughly 45 to 60 seconds of use — enough for one session for most people. Countertop models hold far more but take up permanent space.
If you find yourself refilling mid-clean, the tank is too small for how you use it.
At least two or three settings let you start gently and build up as your gums adapt. Very high pressure is not more effective and can be uncomfortable.
Being able to go low matters more than a high maximum, particularly in the first fortnight.
Different nozzles suit braces, implants, bridges and periodontal pockets. If more than one person uses the device, having several nozzles is a hygiene matter, not a luxury.
Check the cost and availability of replacements before you buy.
Cordless models are compact, travel well and suit small bathrooms; they hold less water and need charging. Countertop models offer a large tank and more settings but occupy permanent space.
For most bathrooms the cordless model is the more practical choice.
Look less at the maximum pressure and more at whether the device can go low — that is what matters while your gums adapt.
